Glenn Opfer Obituary

Glenn A. Opfer, 93, a longtime resident of Lagrange, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, April 5, 2024, at Wesleyan Village in Elyria.  He was born October 20, 1930, in Elyria, to the late Harold and Clara (nee Zollpriester) Opfer.  He was married to the late Joann C. Opfer (nee Gessner) for 67 years.

After graduating from Lagrange High School (currently Keystone High School) in 1949, Glenn enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country between 1949 - 1952.  Glenn and Joann have a daughter, Debbie, and a son-in-law, Jim, who also served in the Marine Corps; a son, Dan, who served in the United States Navy; and a grandson, James, Jr., who is currently an active duty Marine.  Glenn was a volunteer firefighter with the Lagrange Fire Department for 40 years.  His son, Dan, was also a volunteer firefighter in Lagrange, and his grandson, Nathan, is currently a full-time Captain with the Clinton Township Fire and Rescue. He was Postmaster of the Lagrange Post Office for 28 years.  After his retirement in 1990, Glenn built a retirement home for him and Joann, including a workshop behind their house that his family called "Pop's Shop."  Pop spent many hours in his workshop making crafts and decorative items out of wood or iron rod, and making or repairing various items for family and friends. Pop also created many adaptive items for disabilities, to assist his grandson, Justin.

Glenn was a wonderful and loving husband, father, and grandfather who also enjoyed reading, traveling with his wife across the 48 contiguous United States, and visiting with children and grandchildren.  Glenn is survived and deeply missed by his daughter, Debbie (Jim); daughter-in-law, Twila; grandchildren, Heather (Walter), Holly (Chad), James, Jr., Justin, and Nathan; as well as 11 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.  In addition to his parents and wife, Glenn was preceded in death by his son, Dan; and his sister, Janet. The family would like to thank and express our gratitude to the caregivers and staff at Wesleyan Village, and the caregivers and staff at Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care in Valley View for their care, concern, and support.

Per Glenn's pre-arrangements, there will be no viewing or visitation.  Glenn will be cremated, and a service and burial for him and his wife, Joann, will occur at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville, OH 44273 on Monday, April 29, 2024 at 2:15 p.m.  Family and friends are invited to attend.

Duke Funeral Home in Grafton is entrusted with all arrangements, and the family would also like to thank them for their care and assistance during this difficult time of loss and grief.
